(More customer reviews)I was excited to receive this as a present, not so excited when it broke the top off the first bottle I tried to open. It relies on a steel pin that descends about 3cm below the main unit, and on some bottles (and virtually all "half" bottles) that pin pushes directly into the top curve of the bottle itself. Try to force it to fit and the bottle will break. One star off.
But with that caveat, it is simple to operate and the ability to simply eject a cork right out is nice. But it is also a big problem. To do this, the corkscrew must sometimes spin (to unthread itself while ejecting a cork) and sometimes stay still (to yank the cork out of the bottle) and it does a decidedly poor job of figuring out when to do which. Initially, once in a while when trying to pull out a cork the corkscrew would just spin right back out. A second try would get the cork out. Now, after six months, the corkscrew just spins and leaves a hole in the cork, taking two or three tries and sometimes merely leaving a stuck cork full of holes. Another star off.
Okay, so maybe a defect. But hold on - LeCruseat's web site is horribly information-hostile. I have no idea if there is an FAQ about this unit, because when I navigate to their FAQ page (at the bottom of their main page, no "customer support" or "help" link like every other web site in the world - just look at the top right of this page), I have to enter a text term. I entered "Screwpull trigger" and got the answer "please enter some text to search." Final star off, but partial shame on me - I broke my own rule of always checking out the customer service and technical support options on a manufacturer's web site before buying.
So I have sent them an email, we'll see what happens. I hope this is a defective unit and I get a replacemetn without hassle; but the fact remains that for this kind of price, every single unit should work flawlessly.
